Glamping: what is it?
Back to basics.
Richard Desjardins once asked, “Do you need a 5-star when there are 5 billion stars in the sky?
Personally, some time ago, I would have answered “Yes”. Despite my youth and adaptability, I’ve never been much of a camping fanatic. In fact, for a long time I found excuses not to stay in a tent, a caravan or a camper van for a weekend. Even though I’ve always appreciated nature, peace and sharing, I needed a minimum of comfort, a sofa, a private bathroom… Many others before me have made this observation. For a very long time, there was no alternative between standard open-air accommodation and traditional hotels.
And then, in 2007, a new form appeared: Glamping.
So what is glamping?
Etymologically, it’s a contraction of the words “Camping” and “Glamour”.
But in reality?
Camping as we know it has undergone a number of changes since it first appeared. Its rise is, according to some researchers, a direct response to urbanisation and the industrial revolution from the 18th century onwards. Tents were certainly practical, but they were also seen as less destructive of nature. And in the mid-twentieth century, with the advent of the car, loading capacity made the environment much more comfortable. People could now travel for longer. However, this was still a rudimentary way of finding authenticity in holidays. Between 1990 and 2000, caravans took off in leaps and bounds. Comfort moved upmarket and is still doing so today. This has led to top-of-the-range outdoor accommodation: the famous Glamping.
I see it as a modern bobo trend. It’s a new form of atypical accommodation, a more expensive alternative to the classic campsite, but tailor-made and comfortable. We may already have seen teepees, tree houses, bubbles and many other types of accommodation. Gone are the communal toilets and the systematic alignment of tents.
In glamping, we find space, serenity, a room, a bed and all the amenities of a hotel. This makes a holiday in the countryside or by the sea an unusual experience.
Glamping is not aimed at ‘nomadic’ campers, those who usually travel with their tent or caravan. However, these former campers and other more novice campers can be tempted by this new experience and take the plunge. Others, who usually book a hotel room via Booking or Airbnb, will also be willing to try out and adopt a fully-equipped lodge. This type of accommodation is very popular with families, those in higher socio-professional categories and retired people who are attracted by the ecological and comfortable aspects. And it’s attracting the curiosity of everyone. In 2013, the number of overnight stays rose by 18.5%, and by almost 30% the following year in Germany and Austria.
In 2019, more than half of travellers wanted to take part in responsible tourism. The level of expectations in terms of ecological innovations is growing all the time, and glampers are looking for a unique experience that is both environmentally friendly and practical. It also appeals to urban customers with a sense of adventure.
Building on this momentum, Viglamo – Domaine presqu’île de la Franqui has set up its lodges on the shores of the Mediterranean.
Situated between the Etang de La Palme, the cliffs of La Franqui and the sea, this car-free estate is a little corner of paradise.
